It Looks Simple. That’s Why It Works.

In a world of flashing lights and noisy plastic, the Kukoo™ Montessori Object Permanence Box stands out by doing one thing perfectly: building your baby’s focus.

Designed for babies who are just starting to sit up, this is often the very first Montessori material parents introduce. Why? Because it answers a fundamental question in your baby’s brain: “Where did it go?”

When they drop the ball and see it roll out into the tray, they learn Object Permanence—the scientific understanding that people and things still exist, even when we can’t see them. This simple realization builds confidence, independence, and creates moments of deep, quiet concentration.

Give Your Baby the Gift of Focus. Start their Montessori journey with the most trusted tool in the curriculum.

Why Parents (and Babies) Love It:

  • 🧠 The “Aha!” Moment: Seeing the ball disappear and immediately reappear provides instant gratification and reinforces logical thinking.
  • Mastering the Release: Dropping a ball isn’t easy! This box helps babies practice the voluntary release of objects (letting go on purpose), refining their fine motor skills.
  • 🌈 Primary Colors: Includes 3 wooden balls in high-contrast primary colors (Red, Blue, Yellow) to catch baby’s attention without overstimulating them.
  • 🪵 Satisfying Feedback: The gentle thud of the ball dropping and the roll into the tray offers auditory feedback that says “You did it!” without annoying electronic sounds.

How to Play: A Mini Montessori Guide

Use this box to turn playtime into a skill-building session:

  1. Start Simple: Sit opposite your baby. Show them the ball, then slowly drop it into the hole.
  2. Wait for It: Let the ball roll out into the tray. Smile and say, “It came back!”
  3. The Hand-Over: Offer the ball to your baby. Don’t rush them. Let them explore the hole, bang the ball, or mouth it.
  4. The Challenge: Watch as they struggle to align the ball with the hole. This struggle is where the brain growth happens!

My son is only 9 months old and he enjoys this toy! it's helped him build coordination with him holding the ball, and he's even learned to drop it in like he's supposed to. Maybe its not quite for his age - probably more appropriate for a 1 year old? But it works out. Do not leave your little ones alone with this toy though - the wood is very sturdy and hard - my son likes to lift the whole thing and bang it down so we try not to let him do that bc he could hurt himself. Also it does make a loud noise when you drop the ball but it doesn't scare him - he likes it. Overall a neat little toy and good quality. I would buy again for sure.

I liked this product for the first few days. However I noticed that the ramp inside of the box started to sink and the ball will not roll back out. My child is not rough with this toy at all. It seems like a sturdy toy on the outside. The ball is smooth and seems good quality. The inside just doesn’t work for us. But isn’t that the point of the object prominence box that the ball comes out on its own.

I was really afraid from the reviews I'd seen that this wouldn't be sturdy, but it's solid. I have 5 kids and have seen it sat on and stood on and it's sturdy as can be. My son has had it since he was 11 months (he is now 13 months) and it's his favorite. He is so proud when he puts the ball in and then catches it as it comes out. Now we also stuff my daughter's play silks in it and he will pull them out. It keeps him from doing it to our tissue box!

My baby immediately liked the toy, but there are a few issues with it that might warrant a return

    1. The finish on the ball was very rough and had little patches of wood splinters. Considering that anything will ultimately end up in the baby's mouth, this was an issue and had to slightly smooth it out with a file. Also, it's only been a few days, but I'm not confident the wooden ball will hold up well since it's getting consistently a bit wet.
    2. Some parts of the ramp aren't as smooth and the baby sticks his hand inside.

Additional nitpicking is that it probably would've benefitted from being a bit more colorful aside from the red in the gate, but all secondary to the safety issues.

I was late buying this but at the time my son was 10 months old. I showed him how to do it twice and he took off with it! This has made him want to stick anything in any hole. I saw the Lovevery Dropbox but was not interested in subscribing for it so I searched and found this item, which is quite similar to the one I liked from Lovevery. The product is well made and looks sturdy. But the wooden ball makes a very loud sound when dropped down, my baby was first interested, but she then closed her eyes for the sound. She got terrified by the sound and soon lost her interest. We tried a few times to introduce it to her, but she would try to hide in my arms... So disappointed. It could be a very good toy if the sound was not so loud.

Very nice quality toy that I feel is worth the money and would make a nice gift for a 6 month old or older. The box is sturdy, with a nice finish, and smooth edges. The ball that comes with it is solid wood and I think is helpful for fine motor development. Yes, it makes a loud 'plunk' when it falls, but it's wood. Maybe if your baby is scared of the noise, you could put some felt on the ramp inside. So far the baby likes it even though she hasn't mastered the game yet. This would last for multiples or could be a nice hand-me-down.

We were excited to add this to our 8 month old's shelf, but the object permanence box was not well wrapped. When we opened the shipping box, the short edge (keeps the ball in the runway) was loose in the shipping box. Glue is visible on the piece, so we aren't sure if it was just not set properly or if we received someone else's return. Every time we drop the ball into the box, we find red paint. We wiped everything down to clear any old flakes. If we find more chips, we'll know they're new chips and not from shipping or manufacturing and will probably be forced to return the product.

I have a 14 month old baby girl. This drop ball is the perfect size for her, It’s nice and big. The finish is smooth. It is well made, the ball slides out smoothly no matter what, unlike other drop ball toys I’ve tried before, sometimes I would need to shake the ball out. This did not catch her attention right off the box due to the lack of color. However, it does have a red color on one side. I just wish they painted it a little more kid friendly, so it’ll be more inviting. The slide inside the box is rough. It’s not a smooth finish unlike the exterior part. Which can be a risk of getting splinter... My baby puts her hand in the box so I have to keep an eye out on that. Also that is something to consider when buying wooden toys, is the finish.Aside from that, this toy does serve it’s purpose in learning and it is affordable.

This is the second object permanence box I've purchased. This box has a ramp and the ball rolls out of the box, unlike my other one. I like the quality of this toy - a sturdy well-made wooden box and a very smooth wooden ball. What prevented both of us (my baby and I) to enjoy this toy is that the wooden ball, when dropped, makes a VERY unpleasant "thud" sound. I noticed that when I showed my baby how to play, she would close her eyes in the anticipation of this sound. I think it prevented her from enjoying this toy at all. It was on her playing mat for about 1 week and she's never touched it. She is a very intelligent 9-months old and she warms up to new toys within a day or two, especially when parents play with it (and we did, a lot).
I wish the ball was made of silicone or felt to prevent a very loud sound when dropped off. Or, perhaps, the box could have had some lining to prevent the sound.
Great toy, I'd presume, but too annoying for our household's liking.

I wish they had sent me the natural ball instead of the red and I wish it came in other colors for the front panel, besides red. If it wasn’t for the color, I’d give it 5 stars. It works so well and has help up very well for several months now! My 1 year old baby still plays with it. He likes the sound it makes when he drops the ball inside and it hits the ramp. I don’t know if this toy is totally necessary. It only does one thing and it’s kind of big and a little expensive for what it does. I wouldn’t say I regret buying it, I just don’t know if it was totally worth it. My baby plays with the ball with other things too though, so it’s not all bad! The ball is small and is so easy for her to pick up. I’m very happy with this toy and it didn’t take that long for it to finally get here. Just received this, but already very happy with it. My daughter is soon to be 7mths old and I wanted to start introducing this to her. I'm very impressed with the quality and finishing of this product. I'm not worried about splintering or sharp corners, everything is smooth and rounded off. The ball is the perfect size for helping my daughter to use more pressure at her fingertips to grip, further developing that pincer grasp. The only critique I might have is that the walls of the tray be higher. It's easy for the ball to pop out of the tray.

I was a bit worried after reading other reviews about a plastic ball, etc, but very pleased when a sturdy, well made wooden box AND wooden ball arrived this week. My smallest child is 7 months old, and upon showing him how to do this one time he did it as well. A huge success! He first used the ball to tap on the box, then put it in the hole, then tried other objects! He then tried to eat it all, so I'm relieved it is natural and safe for him to slober on. Lol. I recommend offering different size balls and or shapes once your baby has mastered the main work. I offered mine a wool dryer ball (too big), a rectangle wooden montessori tool (just right), and a squish ball (too big unless pushed hard). Happy baby here!

This toy is so basic but helpful! I showed my baby how to put the ball into the hole a couple times a day. It kept her interest and within 2 weeks, she was doing it by herself! Since then, she has started experimenting with other balls and toys "fitting into the hole" and applied that concept to other things. Very cool!

This didn’t keep my baby entertained for ages like I’d hoped but I might have introduced it a bit late. The one benefit I saw almost immediately was that instead of always throwing things out of containers he started to learn to put things back. Whew.

The object permanence box is a traditional Montessori material that is designed to foster the concept of object permanence, things still exist even when you can’t see them. It also indirectly helps them develop focus and concentration and gives them practice developing fine motor skills through the whole-hand grasp.

The box was designed exactly as the Montessori!

We are trying to follow montessori principles at home with our daughter, so we first purchased this box to help teach her object permanence. While simple, this has been her absolute favorite toy since she was 6 months old. At first she loved watching us model it, then loved trying to do it herself, and now loves seeing if larger and smaller objects will fit in. This box keeps her entertained for very long periods of time and also helps give her exercise as she loves crawling after the balls when they don't quite make it in the hole. She has also been very curious about how the box works and looks at the box from all angles to explore. Also, the quality if very good on this. We also purchased the "next" level, which is the cylinder shape with a door and hole and she has not taken to that one (yet). One thing is that the ball that comes with it is very poor quality and its' slippery plastic features made the ball pop right our of her hand each time, so instead we use a ball that came with the Hape Geometric Rattle set, which has a little rubber grip to it and it is perfect for it!

I am very satisfied with my purchase. It is built sturdy. The ball rolls out every time. My 11 month old is still in the stage of placing things in his mouth, so he licks it and then drops it in the hole. I sit with him while he uses it. After a while, I will leave him alone with it. I always point to the whole and say "in." I read some of the complaints from other viewers, but I have zero complaints. I am glad the other comments did not deter me. I read about this several times before deciding to give it a try since there were a lot of good reviews in spite of some bad ones. It was a prime item, so I received it in two days. I am a satisfied customer.

It's a phase of development. I loved watching him study this toy. He got good at getting the ball long before he would release it into the box. Once he did the reward on his face was amazing. Then he practiced this skill, and still does at 18 months. We call this his school work along with other activities that hello engage different parts of his brain. Not to say that this ball never goes missing our gets thrown around the room and put in other toys. It so does. But that's part of learning too and we welcome that as well.

I appreciate the simple colors. Probably helpful for a child with a visual impairment, especially if you add some red tape around the hole.

Love this toy! Wish I would have found it earlier, but my almost 11 month old is really enjoying it. It's one of the few toys she will sit still and play with. The ball is smaller than I expected, about the size of a golf ball, but doesn't seem to be a problem.

We bought this because we wanted to start integrating Montessori toys for our LO. My husband was skeptical as it seemed simple and thought that it would not hold her attention and was not happy about how much it cost. I convinced him to keep it and we were pleasantly surprised! After showing her the ball and emphasizing the hole, she immediately started putting the ball in and was very intrigued by how it rolled out. About a month later we were excited when she started grabbing other toys and tried to put them in the hole and seeing if they would roll out as well. It was exciting to watcher her make those connections. I would highly recommend switching out the ball for ones that have different textures, sounds, etc. to keep it interesting. We do a toy rotation and when we bring it out she does play with each excitedly each time, but it does not keep her attention as long as many other toys do, like bead mazes and musical instruments. Good for development, but doesn't hold attention as long as I wish it did.

I think this is one of the more interesting toys my daughter has. It doesn't light up or make crazy sounds. But it does have a very satisfying plop when the ball hits and comes out. Well made. Traditional toy. Simple and elegant.

    Pros:
    Stimulating
Keep her attention longer than I expected.

    Cons:
She is often just more interested in eating the ball.
The toy is a little too big for a baby to do both motions from the sitting position.
    Sharp corners on the wood.
    Kind of expensive.

Very well constructed. My nine month old is now starting to get the concept and enjoys it very much. Only one criticism/caution. Our son is very big for his age and is still putting objects into his mouth. The ball is about the size of a golf ball and he can almost fit it in his mouth. Naturally, we're concerned so we watch him closely when he plays with this.

Bought this for our daughter who is currently 7.5 months old. Really can't be used well until they are mobile. She sits up and tries to play with it but it's a little to big for her to get close enough. Will bring it out again once she can crawl. Looks well built and sturdy.

This is a great Montessori Object Permanence Box. The one we received does not have sharp edges, and is very sturdy. It is made from a ply wood, which is appropriate given the price. I don't mind that it is plywood, most furniture these days isn't even made out of something as nice as ply.

I really like that there is a sort of internal ramp and that there are pieces on the inside that guide the ball to the opening. The ball always comes out.

My only complaint is that I prefer toys made from natural materials as much as possible, which is one of the main reasons I chose this product. Why then skimp and provide a plastic whiffle ball? I have tossed the ball that comes with this and replaced it with a wooden sphere instead.

I demonstrated how this works to my 5-month-old every day for months. Just once a day. I left it where she could reach it.
Eventually, she started showing interest. The challenges for her are to close her hand around the ball without it jumping away, and releasing it after it's already partly through the hole.

The most she has ever done it is 5 times at one sitting. It's simply not that interesting to her.
But, she has favored developing her gross motor skills, such as walking and crawling, so I should not be surprised.

This works well with a wooden ball as well. It has a more satisfying sound.

One tip: to get her interested in putting the ball in the hole instead of her mouth, I used to poke my fingers up through the hole. This called her attention to the hole. She enjoyed seeing my fingers move and feeling them.

Until your baby is sitting up comfortably, they probably will not be able to use this toy. Even after they are sitting up, it's awkward to know what position to put them in so they can access the top hole and the exit hole easily. I found myself rotating the toy to give them easy access. Once they are bigger, then they figure it out for themselves.

The product arrived with a small piece of wood/plastic loose. I threw it out, then I realized it was the piece that should be glued to the inside to deflect the ball to the exit hole. It works fine anyway. That's why it looses a star. But overall, I'm happy for the price vs. Neinhus product.

It's really hard for me to tell if this product is made from wood or plastic that looks like wood. But for the price and how often it's used, that's fine with me. This is for home use.

The Juliana Group has this product with a slightly modified design. You may want to check it out. It's about $60. If I was in the classroom, I'd choose Juliana.

Because this is such a single-purpose toy, it's hard to know if it's a good buy, or if it's better to buy the ones with multiple hole shapes, or one for each shape. I decided to go for this one because it's the simples of these types of toys. Then for the next step up, I got the similar box that comes with different tops that slide in and out. Each top has different shapes. The shapes fall into a drawer that pulls out. It works OK.

If money was no object, I would buy single-purpose boxes like this one for each shape. They are more sturdy and it's easier to concentrate on the task at hand.

I bought this toy for my grand daughter when she was just under 7 months. It was interesting to observe that she showed no understanding of putting the all in the hole at first, but loved to watch me do it. As her brain developed further in just a few months I watched her suddenly know how to put the ball in the hole and look in to see where it went. It always delights her when it comes out in the tray, and she loves to repeat the process over and over. The toy is well made, sturdy, and attractive. Well worth the money, especially compared to all the toys for 6-12 months that requires very little in the way of brain development such as those thousands of toys that make noise and require little participation from the child.
